Fear comes in all shapes and sizes. For some people, it’s a fear of heights or public speaking. For others, it’s a fear of being in front of a camera. This might seem like a small thing, but for someone struggling with it, it’s very real. Recently, I worked with a client whose story gave me a new perspective on how photography can help people push through those fears.

Her husband had gotten in touch with me to book a boudoir session as a gift for her. From the start, it was a great experience working with both of them. We collaborated to create something that felt personal and meaningful. By the end of the process, they were both thrilled with the results, but it wasn’t until I spoke to her after the session that I really understood how much this shoot meant to her.

When I asked her what had motivated her to do the session, her answer caught me off guard. She said, “I had a huge fear about pictures. I grew up in a country with a dictatorship, so I was terrified of being in photographs.” That wasn’t something I had expected to hear. It made me pause and think about how photography, which many of us take for granted as something fun or creative, could hold a completely different meaning for someone else, rooted in a much more serious experience.

She went on to explain, “The boudoir was just...from all the pictures that I saw online, those spoke more to me, felt more pushing to the extreme, and I had a lot of fun. But it was to overcome a fear.”

For her, this session was about more than just pictures. It was an opportunity to take something she had been scared of for a long time and approach it in a way that felt empowering. When she described how she felt after the session, it was clear it had been a turning point. She said, “When I was walking back to my car…I was very, very happy. It felt like that whole fear that I had, it just dropped. It felt very free. I’m very glad I did it!”

Hearing her talk about that shift made me think. Something like a fear of being photographed might not seem like a big deal at first glance, but everyone has their reasons for feeling the way they do. Sometimes, those reasons are tied to experiences or circumstances we can’t even imagine.

This experience reminded me that, as a photographer, my job isn’t just to take good photos. It’s about understanding each client and where they’re coming from. It’s about creating a space where they feel comfortable and in control. Boudoir photography, in particular, puts a lot of trust on both sides. It’s not necessarily about fixing a fear or insecurity, but about giving people the chance to see themselves in a new way, on their terms.

The First Time I Saw Myself: A Boudoir Awakening

I didn't go into the shoot expecting to be transformed. I just wanted some beautiful photos.

But deep down... I didn't trust myself.
My skin was pale. I hadn't worked out. I lacked muscle tone.
I told myself it was "just in case" because if I didn't take the opportunity now, I might never get the chance again.

But what I didn't know then was...
This wasn't just about photos.
It was about seeing myself truly for the first time.

The morning of the shoot, I threw on a faded sweatshirt with the words Sun Goddess barely legible across the front, layered over a short knit dress.

It felt ironic at the time—Sun Goddess—when I barely felt like a spark of myself.
But still, some part of me was quietly hoping to shine.

When I walked into Patrick's studio, I brought all the parts of me I usually kept hidden:

The girl who couldn't stop picking herself apart.
The woman whose heart was still healing from a breakup.
The soul that wanted to be seen but was terrified of rejection.
The smile I'd dimmed so many times, not sure it was enough.

I didn't realize my eyes could look so seductive.

We never see our own eyes like that, not the way someone else can when they're really looking.

But Patrick saw me.
He saw the angles I couldn't.
He caught my smile mid-laugh, my gaze between poses, and the way light kissed my skin.

He didn't just photograph me.
He witnessed me.
With so much tenderness. So much respect.

He led me through the experience gently, like an artist coaxing out light from shadow.

And as I played the songs on my playlist that made me feel like my fun, flirty, show-off self, something opened.
I got lost in the music.
I started to move.
I started to smile.
I stopped thinking.

I surprised myself.

I could be a boudoir model when someone made me feel safe enough to believe in myself.

What he said as he walked me to my car afterward will always stay with me:
"It's so sad that you are so hard on yourself."

He didn't say it with pity. He said it with presence.
It mirrored the same sadness I had buried beneath the surface.

And in that moment, something came rushing back.

Words my ex had said to me before we broke up:
"It's so sad that you're kind to everyone else... but you're mean to your own heart."

Two men. Two moments.
Both seeing something I hadn't yet faced.
That the love I was so desperate to receive... I hadn't yet learned to give to myself.

And when he said it, I felt something break open inside me.

I thought I'd been hiding that part of me, the sadness, the self-doubt, but he saw right through the facade.
He saw the girl behind the practiced smile.
And somehow, it didn't make him turn away.
It made him care.

Driving home, his words echoed in my mind.
Maybe that was why dating had been so hard.
Because I didn't yet believe I was worthy of adoration.
Because somewhere deep inside, I thought love had to be earned, not simply received.

But now... I had photographic proof.
A mirror.
A reminder.

In the weeks and months that followed, I began to see the beauty that Patrick saw in me.
My natural smile.
My wild, expressive eyes.
The softness, the allure.
The essence of a young Brigitte Bardot we had envisioned together came alive in those photos.

Slowly... gently... I began to let that image of myself in.

And if I could go back and speak to the version of me who walked into that studio in her faded Sun Goddess sweatshirt...
I would hold her face in my hands and say:

You are beautiful.
You are enough.
You don't need to hide your smile to be loved.
You are worthy of being seen—fully, wildly, softly—just as you are.

Because in the end, this wasn't just a gift for my future partner.
It was a gift for me.

Why I Shoot Boudoir Photography (And Why It Might Not Be What You Think)

When people first hear I’m a boudoir photographer, the question usually follows, “Why?” It’s not every day you hear about a guy choosing this path, and honestly, it’s a fair question. My answer is layered, much like my own story, but at its core, my reason for shooting boudoir comes down to something simple yet profound—I want to create experiences that genuinely touch and inspire people.

The Evolution of My Why

I’ll admit, the reason I shoot boudoir has evolved over the years. When I first picked up a camera, my focus was on creating amazing images, plain and simple. But as I grew in this field and connected with the incredible people who stepped in front of my lens, I realized boudoir photography wasn’t just about the photography. It was about how those images could transform someone’s self-perception.

From Fitness to Empowerment

Before photography became my full focus, I owned a fitness studio for many years. My approach in fitness was never about six-packs or superficial aesthetics (though, sure, they’re nice bonuses). It was about empowering people to feel strong, capable, and healthy for their own reasons. Whether it was lifting their grandkids or reducing back pain, the true joy came from seeing clients transform how they felt about their abilities and their bodies.

Boudoir photography feels very similar, just with a faster timeline. Instead of months or years to see progress, a single boudoir session can give someone this surprising, instant transformation. Sure, beautiful photos are a highlight—but the real magic happens when clients see themselves in a new light. When they discover that their body, just as it is, can be beautiful and worth celebrating. Watching those moments of realization, those pure joy-filled reactions (sometimes accompanied by happy tears), is something words can’t fully capture.

A Return to Creativity

That said, it’s not just about the client experience. Boudoir photography also allows me to tap into a part of myself that I pushed aside for many years. Growing up, I was always drawn to art—I was even an art major for a brief stint in college. But practicality steered me into sports medicine instead, and for a while, that creative part of me took a back seat.

Everything changed when I picked up a camera again about ten years ago. At first, it was just a hobby. I used it to promote my fitness business and capture moments during my travels. That began to change with a photography class I took, where the instructor happened to specialize in boudoir photography. Seeing their work and hearing their perspective opened my eyes to the genre, and it immediately resonated with me. Boudoir was this perfect melding of everything I love. It was artistic, it was personal, and it had the power to make someone feel amazing.

Now, boudoir photography has become this wonderful creative outlet for me. Whether I’m photographing delicate poses or playing with lighting to highlight someone’s unique silhouette, I get to feed the artistic side of me while also providing something meaningful for my clients.

Why It Matters

I wholeheartedly believe that serving others is one of the highest forms of existence. Whether it was empowering clients as a fitness coach or now as a photographer, knowing I’ve played a small role in helping someone feel better about themselves brings me so much satisfaction.

Boudoir photography isn’t just pictures. It’s an experience. It’s about celebrating where you are right now, in this body you’ve been given. It’s about uncovering strength, confidence, and self-love that maybe you didn’t even realize was there. Being able to guide someone through that experience, to see the joy it brings them—that’s everything to me.

Look, I get it. When we’re nervous or unsure about something, it’s easy to whip out a list of excuses. Life's busy, you're juggling work, family, and about a hundred other things, and sometimes, taking care of yourself just doesn’t make it to the top of the list. Sound familiar? Then there’s the whole “I need to lose 15 pounds first” or “I just don’t have the money right now” storyline. Trust me, I’ve heard it all.

But I’m here to tell you something important. Whatever excuse is holding you back, you can do this. You’re worthy of feeling amazing about yourself right now—not 15 pounds from now, not when life “calms down,” and not when your ducks decide to line up perfectly (spoiler alert, they won’t). This is your reminder that you deserve self-love, and a boudoir shoot could be the exact thing that helps you unlock it.

Our main studio is located close to downtown Orlando and serves as the perfect backdrop for your boudoir session. But, if you’re dreaming of something different, we’ve got options! Beach vibes? A classy resort suite? Even your own home? We’ll help you find the perfect setting to capture the exact mood you’re looking for.

3. How do I prepare, and what should I bring?

We’ve got you covered! Preparation starts well before shoot day, and we’ll guide you every step of the way. You’ll get access to two downloadable guides to help you feel totally prepared: The Ultimate Boudoir Prep Guide and our Boudoir Outfit Guide.

Even more important, every client gets a personal consultation where we go over all the details—from what to bring to what to expect during the shoot. This is your chance to ask questions, share your preferences, and get excited!

4. Is hair and makeup included?

Yes! While it’s not “required,” we highly suggest it for the full experience. Our professional hair and makeup team knows all the tips and tricks to make sure you look absolutely radiant on camera. Plus, starting the day with a little glam session adds a spa-like vibe to your shoot. Seriously, it’s one of our clients’ favorite parts!

5. What if I have no idea how to pose?

Honestly, don’t even worry about it. Posing is our job! From the first click of the camera, we’ll guide you on everything you need to do. The way you hold your hands, where you look, how to tilt your head… we’ll walk you through it all. Even if it feels a little funny at first, trust us. By the end, you’ll feel like a total pro.

6. How long does it take to get my images?

After your session, we pour love and care into professionally editing your images. Your image reveal will typically be ready within just a few days! From there, you’ll select your favorites and decide on your dream keepsakes, whether that’s a luxury album, mesmerizing wall art, or both. Delivery of your final products takes about 14 to 21 days.If you’re working with a tight timeline (hello, wedding gift deadlines), rush orders are available. Just give us the heads up!

7. Will you share my photos online?

This is completely up to you. We’d love to showcase your stunning images on our website or social media, but only if you’re 100% comfortable with it. You’ll get the final say, and if you agree to share your photos but change your mind later? No problem at all. We’ll happily remove them. Your privacy is always a top priority.

8. What’s the cost?

Great question! Here’s the breakdown:

The creative fee is $498 (or two $249 payments) and covers your design and planning consultation, the session itself, and your post-shoot image reveal.
Most clients budget an additional $1500+ for artwork, with albums starting at $995 and collections (the best value!) starting at $2495. Collections often include a luxury album, wall art, and more because, honestly, you’ll want to keep these memories forever.

We also offer pre-session payment plans packed with perks and work with financing partners like Affirm and Klarna to help spread out payments.

Sometimes, the most powerful stories come straight from the people who’ve lived them. That’s why I wanted to share a heartfelt experience from one of my amazing clients, in her own words.

This incredible mom wanted to celebrate her pregnancy and capture the beauty of carrying her last child. But with time running out and hesitation creeping in, she almost gave up on the dream. I came across you in the middle of the night… I was like, this is it! I have to do this one.

Making it happen

I called multiple times that morning, and when you got back to me, I said, thank god! Now, can he fit me in like a week? I highly doubt it. But then you fit me into the schedule, and I thought, oh yeah, you’re perfect.

The shoot… oh my gosh. I’ve never done one before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. But my expectations? They were blown away. I felt so comfortable and relaxed the entire time. I’ve been stressing so much, but for some reason, when I got to the shoot, so much of that stress just melted away. It felt like therapy. My counselors always tell me to do something for myself, and this was finally the one thing for myself that I’ll never regret.

This is my last child—no more kids—and now, finally, I have something to treasure from one of my pregnancies. It makes me feel so warm inside. I’m just so happy.”

At Patrick Michael Boudoir, we’re used to getting creative with our shoots, but every once in a while, a project comes along that’s outside the usual and just plain fun. That’s exactly what happened when Hanna Schmitt reached out to us during her visit to Florida from London.

Hanna runs a thriving handstand training business called HannaOnHands.com. While visiting Florida to scout potential locations for live handstand workshops and retreats, she took a well-earned break from the grey skies of the UK to enjoy some sunshine. It was also the perfect opportunity to update her website and social media with dynamic new images —and that's where we came in.

Hanna found us through Google and gave us a shout. “I know it wasn’t the normal boudoir request,” she said, “but I felt Patrick had the artistic eye for what I was looking for, so I reached out to him.”

Making it happen

With Hanna’s packed schedule, we worked quickly to figure out a plan that fit her vision. After chatting about her goals, we decided on Mead Botanical Garden in Winter Park—a location with lots of vibrant backdrops that could highlight her strength and creativity.

On shoot day, the weather wasn’t exactly Florida postcard-perfect—overcast skies and all—but honestly, that soft light was a win. It gave everything a warm, earthy vibe that worked beautifully. Hanna was a total pro, bringing her energy and confidence to every shot. The result? A creative mix of photos she could use for her business, marketing, and more.
